What to Expect
What your loved one's first weeks with us look like — warm, quiet, one-on-one.
Visit 1 — The Assessment
60 minutes. History, goals, gait and balance testing. Your loved one leaves with a clear picture of their fall-risk profile.
Visit 2 — Foundation
We begin with the fundamentals: posture, stance, weight shifting, and safe recovery from small stumbles.
Weeks 2–4 — Building
Progressive strength, single-leg work, and gait training. Dual-task exercises begin to link body and mind.
Home Safety Visit (optional)
Home visits are optional and can be arranged if needed. When requested, our ECHM (Executive Certification in Home Modification)-certified occupational therapists visit the home to identify hazards — rugs, lighting, stairs, bathroom — and deliver both a written report and an in-person debrief so your loved one and the family understand every finding and the recommended modifications.
Weeks 4–6 — Confidence Returns
Clients typically report a noticeable reduction in fear of falling and improved confidence navigating daily environments.
Weeks 5–8 — Real-World Skills & Physical Gains
Curbs, uneven ground, turning, carrying, and confident navigation. Physical benefits are achieved, including significant improvement in leg strength, reaction times, and the ability to naturally recover from a stumble.
Homework & Transition to Ongoing Skill Training
Homework is assigned after every session to improve awareness of fall risks and reinforce balance skills. Balance training does not end — your loved one transitions to ongoing skill training with a written home program and a continuing weekly schedule, because balance skills degrade without continued practice and the aging process does not stop.
A few example home exercises
These are just examples of the kinds of small habits your coach may weave into your day — the actual list is personalized to you and evolves visit by visit as your coach changes things up to keep the work challenging and fun.
- Single-leg stand while brushing teeth, with an added mental task.
- Chair squats — stand up from chairs without using your arms.
- Standing hip circles — 8–10 slow circles each side, near a counter.
- Leg swings — front-to-back and side-to-side, holding support.
Consistency creates confidence.
